Abandoned Places in Arizona

Arizona has lost most of its famous abandoned places since 2021. The Casa Grande Domes, the Christmas-themed town of Santa Claus and the Fort Courage trading post have all been bulldozed, and the Breakers water park at Marana is now an industrial subdivision. Two sites are still out there; only one is legal to enter.

Humphreys Peak B-24 wreckage, Coconino National Forest

Standing, scattered, and legal to visit. A Consolidated TB-24J Liberator hit the west slope of the San Francisco Peaks at about 03:20 on 15 September 1944, killing all 8 crew. Tail turrets, propellers, wing sections with landing gear and the pilot’s armoured seat lie in the boulder field. Hike the Humphreys Peak Trail about 3 miles, then a faint cairned route near the seventh switchback: roughly 7 miles round trip. Removing wreckage from National Forest land is prohibited.

Gila River Memorial Airport, near Chandler

Standing, and off limits. Douglas C-54 Skymasters, a Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon and the remains of a DC-7 were still on the 1,345-acre field in photographs from November 2024 and May 2025. Several airframes have been burned by arsonists. The field is inside the Gila River Indian Community reservation, which took control in 2007. Entry without tribal permission is trespass on a reservation, handled under tribal and federal jurisdiction, not state trespass law. Photographs of the boneyard.

Hill Street School, Globe

Not abandoned any more. The 1920 Trost & Trost school sat empty about 18 years, then reopened in April 2025 as 64 apartments, 80 percent of them reserved for seniors, after a $22.8 million rebuild. The gymnasium is now a community room. What the interior looked like before.

The Casa Grande Domes, Pinal County

Demolished. Pinal County condemned the foam-and-concrete shells as structurally unsafe in 2015 and county crews tore them down on 9 January 2023. Only 4 of a planned 6 or 7 were finished, built in 1982 at about $150,000 each. The Thornton Road parcel is bare private land. The domes while they stood.

Fort Courage Trading Post, Houck

Demolished in February 2026. The stockade at I-40 exit 348 was a trading post, not an armory, and F Troop was never filmed there whatever the old postcards claimed. The parcel sold for a truck stop and is now a construction site. Fort Courage before demolition.

Christmas Tree Inn, Santa Claus

Demolished. Every structure in the Christmas-themed roadside town on US-93 was removed between late 2021 and January 2022, down to the pink children’s train and the wishing well. The land is private; the empty lot is visible from the highway shoulder. The town before it went.

One unconfirmed case: the old Jerome post office on Jerome-Perkinsville Road was wrecked inside, with a collapsed second-floor ceiling. Nobody has documented it since September 2019, so its condition is unknown. The land around it is posted against trespassers.
